In the 15th century: the city of Usak (Oushak) in western Turkey (Historically called Anatolia) became a major rug production center during the Ottoman Empire. The superb quality of the materials and an emphasis on craftsmanship made Oushak rugs a staple choice for wealthy patrons.
Originally celebrated for the beautiful star and medallion designs—Oushaks are also recognized for their floral attributes; this evolution started in the late 19th century when Oushaks became popular in Europe due to their fascination with Persian carpets (floral patterns were Persian influence). Oushaks were generally woven in a method known as the Ghiordes knot or the Turkish knot: where colored weft yarn passes over the two warp yarns and then pulled through between them cut to form the pile.
