Khotan rugs were once known as Samarkand rugs, named after the Central Asian trading center. Its popularity was due to the combination of Asian aesthetics along with Western ideas in mind.
The kingdom of Khotan had abundant natural resources, which led to silk cultivation. A high quantity of silk helped transform the production of carpets into a significant product in the city.
An antique Khotan rug comprises of the following attributes: (1) decorative patterns, (2) multi-colored stripes in the borders (Chinese influence), (3) the use of a central medallion (Tibetan influence), (4) discs (Buddhist influence), and (5) geometric motifs (Indian Influence).
Since the 5th century, rugs from Khotan have been so popular that their influence and techniques have found their way to India and Europe.
Here at French Accents, we took two directions. One: we have stayed true to the antique weaving technique and design in our Traditional Khotan collection. Two: we have taken a step further and modernized the traditional format by simplifying the core patterns, colors, and weaves.
Our traditional Khotans are hand sheared, with minimal pile height, and wear on the carpet to recreate the traditional texture and look.
Both lines are perfect for traditional to modern settings and an ideal choice for a casual rug. They are hand-knotted using 100% wool and available in standard and custom sizes. Contact us about our custom capabilities.
